On Tuesday night in Oklahoma, a red-headed Republican Congressman named James Lankford defeated primary opponent T.W. Shannon and became the Oklahoma Senate GOP nominee. The two were vying for retiring GOP Senator Tom Coburn’s seat. Coburn is battling prostate cancer and will step aside after 8 years as an Oklahoma Senator.
In a beet-red state, Lankford is the heavy favorite to win the general election in November and become the junior Oklahoma Senator, joining Jim Inhofe, who has been a U.S. Senator since 1995.
Here are 5 things you should know about Oklahoma’s next U.S. Senator. Even if Lankford were to go Todd Akin on them, the folks in Oklahoma would still very likely come up with more votes for this man than his Democratic counterpart.
When you watch the videos below, you may be a little creeped out about this guy. There’s just something that doesn’t… seem right with him.
1. He’s a devout Southern Baptist, who has held leadership positions with the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma. The majority of his leadership positions involved (gulp) youth groups.
2. He’s a
self-loathing homosexual homophobe who believes that being gay is a choice. He calls homosexuality a “personal behavior choice” and claims that they want special rights based on that behavior.
KEYES: But you think that even if you can’t see they’re that way, you don’t think someone is born gay necessarily?
LANKFORD: Do I personally? No. I don’t. I think it’s a choice issue. Are tendencies and such? Yes. But I think it’s a choice issue.
3. He believes that it is perfectly okay to fire people based on their sexual orientation.
TRASSER: Would you support a law that says you can’t fire someone for their sexual orientation –
KEYES: Similar to protections for people on race or gender?
LANKFORD: Well, you’re now dealing with behavior and I’m trying to figure out exactly what you’re trying to mean by that. Because you’re dealing with — race and sexual preferences are two different things. One is a behavior-related and preference-related and one is something inherently — skin color, something obvious, that kind of stuff. You don’t walk up to someone on the street and look at them and say, “Gay or straight?”
4. He then tried to deny that he said homosexuals should be fired, but essentially doubled down on what he previously said.
According to Lankford, he didn’t say employers should be allowed to fire someone for being a homosexual, but he did admit to saying that being one is a choice, and they should not be protected from workplace discrimination. Apparently, it’s not being gay that is the problem – it’s the “personal behavior choice” that comes from being gay. Very enlightening. Perhaps such a statement says more about Lankford than he’d care to let on.
5. He linked gun violence to welfare mothers in the most bizarre way possible.
CONSTITUENT: My question is regarding the guns and is Washington at all aware of the psychotropic drugs that these children are taking? I guarantee it 100 percent that’s our big problem. […]
LANKFORD: I agree with that. I think there’s a bunch of issues that, quite frankly, most liberals are afraid to talk about. […] Where are we on all those psychiatric drugs? We’ve overmedicated kids. Quite frankly some of the overmedication of kids are because welfare moms want to get additional benefits and if they can put them on SSI through maintenance drugs, they can also put them on Social Security disability and get a separate check. That is wrong on every single level. Not only is it fraudulent to the government, but it also tells a kid with great potential, “don’t try because you’re disabled.”

Keep an eye on this guy. We’re likely to hear a lot more about him, very little of it good.
