(23 Feb 2019) Survivors marched through downtown Rome on Saturday as Pope Francis’ landmark summit on preventing clergy sexual abuse opened for its penultimate day.
They marched toward the Vatican protesting decades of cover-up and demanded accountability.
Among the marchers was Alberto Athie of Mexico, one of the original accusers of the alleged paedophile founder of the Legion of Christ, the Rev. Marcial Maciel.
Athie said that the Vatican “wanted to control inside by secret and reserve of the WPope” and criticised how the catholic church have been keeping sexual abuse cases a secret from authorities.
Another protester, Mark Rozzi, a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representative, added that “our delegation would come here in Rome and bang on the door of the Pope to basically tell him to tell his bishops to stand down.”
