I first saw Spong on an episode of Bill Maher’s old show “Politically Incorrect” some 18 or so years ago. I was more or less a passive-agnostic at the time, and found his views about “god” refreshing. Why? Because his intentions were immediately clear to me. He was indeed trying to advance religion’s view and philosophy about the whole concept of “god”, to what it should be in the modern world. He also pulls no punches about admitting that churches use the bronze-age concept of “god” to control people, as a business.
Why does this matter? Because if more believers can shift to his idea of religion, it would DRAMATICALLY reduce the influence of religion over mankind. And that can only be a good thing. As long as there are religions, there will be the dire need for more clerics with his philosophy.
It’s part of the overall process of de-clawing religion, and rendering it truly harmless to the rest of us.
