Bo Burnham vs Atheists (or Anti-Theism)

8

I love Bo Burnham. He’s one of my favorite comedians. However, he said a few things on the H3 Podcast that I strongly disagree with.

It should be noted that I don’t know if he’s an atheist or theist. I’ve followed him for a long time and he’s always struck me as anti-religious (especially when he makes fun of Bible camp). It doesn’t matter though. I just think religion shouldn’t be handled with kiddie gloves – but rather, steel fists.

The original clip can be found here:

The whole interview (which I suggest) can be found here:

I've been thinking about what he said on the podcast for a while and I'm glad someone made a video of it. He's acting like atheism is a juvenile phase everyone goes through when you're young and now he's so much more "mature" that he has stopped criticizing religion. The problem with that train of thought though is that religion is dangerous and actively promotes bigotry. The people who are fighting hard against bettering our society and fighting to put their discriminatory rhetoric in the government DON'T treat it as a phase. They DON'T mature and grow out of it.… Read more »

You earned a sub from this anti-theist.

Grr Mania, you said this beautifully. I think No Burnham is an extremely talented young man, who is growing up and learning that success, here in the US, means being careful of what you say. I think his career is more important, momentarily, than his 'activism'. But hopefully, he'll realize that he can have both. Off topic, but have you ever listened to Tim Minchin? Especially his 2006 thru 2014 or so. He's fantastic. Some of his best are Lullaby, The Fence, Tenfoot Cock and a FewHundred Virgins, The Pope song, Come Home Cardinal Pell, Canvas Bags, Prejudice, YouTube Lament,… Read more »

I’m anti theist when it comes to the religious pushing their beliefs into other peps. Such as creationism vs evolution or against gay marriage. I’m fine with people believing with what they want- but I would think the world would be better without religion. That’s why it’s still good to have these discussions. If there’s a problem- discuss it. Most anti theists aren’t arguing just to show of their intelligence- they’re fighting for a cause they believe is just. Freedom from religion. But yeah, when anti theism just becomes bullying or is forced onto others- that’s where I also draw… Read more »

My all-time favorite comedians were Carlin and Williams (R.I.P. to both) As for church? Fuck that. I don't need to go somewhere to see/hear a bunch of people praying to the ceiling, or flop around on the floor spewing gibberish. I'm by no means a rebellious young punk either

Sad to see how the mighty have fallen. Bo's song on god is far, far more wise then anything he said here.

The 11th Hour

An atheist was seated next to a little girl on an airplane and he turned to her and said, “Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.” The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total stranger, “What would you want to talk about?” “Oh, I don’t know,” said the atheist. “How about why there is no God, or no Heaven or Hell, or no life after death?” as he smiled smugly. “Okay,” she said. “Those could be interesting topics but let me ask… Read more »
