Can I Talk You Out of Your Faith? – VIDEO

Is it possible to “talk someone out of their faith?” Is it even appropriate or worthwhile to make an attempt? If so, how might atheists best approach those with deep-seated (and often lifelong) religious convictions to foster real discourse and encourage critical thinking?

I am of the understanding Dr. Begotian doesn't think religious people should have political rights?

That's all great, but theists do the same thing to get people to "believe" their nonsense through argument. Once, I was at Hyde Park in London and 3 muslim guys from the same group and very near to each other were tryin to convince, as it was happening, rather to make people think for themselves. I stood there for 10 minutes listening and I haven't heard so much bullshit in 10 minutes, in my life! They even used science terminology to confuse the people they were talking to, until one of the listeners opened his mouth and put them all in place. They hope they'll get ordinary people who haven't thought much on the subject and convince them which way to go, making it appear as argument, conversation or debate. Really sleazy. No honesty involved! Unethical proselytism.

The comments on this video are a good reminder to all of the so called New Atheists that some of your beliefs might not be as soundly grounded as you think they are. So that when you do attempt to talk to someone who does not believe as you do it is possible you will have your own sacred cow slaughtered in front of your eyes. You should be prepared for this eventuality.

Notice how Secular Guy can't get past the very first question that I ask him. "What is a regressive progressive or liberal?" He can't answer the question so instead he accuses me of being this mythical creature and then explains that the reason I can't know what a regressive progressive is is because he has the magical ability to just know what one is and I do not because I am one.

Ah, no, it isn't. But then Secular Guy pretends to be upset by lengthy replies and runs away. Running away when you receive criticism you didn't anticipate and cannot counter is unlikely to impress your opponents. However, running away when confronted is very effective in allowing you to continue to maintain a belief that cannot withstand sustained criticism. It is very easy to do online but rather difficult when you are talking in person. So it is best you be prepared for this in advance.

Oh and try not to be such a fucking prick in person also. It might help.

Can I talk you out of your paycheck?

Why is it some people feel the need to believe in any god when I have never felt that need?

Sam Harris said : "If you want to open a restaurant that serves only redheaded people, I think you should be free to do that. If you only want to serve people who are six feet tall, you should be able to do that. And, by definition, if you only want to serve Muslims, or whites, or Jews, if you want a club that excludes everyone but yourself, I think you should be free to do all of these things, and people should be free to write about you, to picket in front of your store, or clubhouse, or restaurant." – Sam Harris, from Ask Me Anything) . I may be mistaken, but I if I disagree with Sam Harris' statement above, I am a supposedly a "regressive" , yes? no?

What is this bullshit about the regressive left? There is no such thing. If your politics are regressive you are not on the progressive left. It sounds like neo-conservatives like Sam Harris are just projecting their own beliefs into others.

It really depends on who brings it up. If someone comes out in public and pushes their religion on others , then you can go after them with the facts.
If you approach them, then Dr Boghossian's method is really the only way you can make any progress.
