Many Christian Conservatives constantly seek out clues of the Almighty God’s work here on earth. That trait, combined with their haughty belief that America is God’s favorite nation in the world, leads to some awfully silly delusions.
One such delusion occurred when in August of this year, a fissure ranging from a half mile to a mile long formed, purportedly along the U.S. – Mexico border. The fissure was up to 15 feet wide in parts and measured as deep as 30 feet. Outside of the “Goddidit” theory, it is not completely known why the fissure formed, although it has been suggested that an underground stream may have eroded the ground above it after the area received some heavy rainfall. You know… science.
A few conservative blogs, like this one, and that one, seized upon news of the chasm, for some unknown reason believing that it had formed on the border between Mexico and the U.S., and credited God for it. Why? Because apparently God doesn’t care for Mexicans and other brown people, and He certainly won’t stand for them crossing over the border into the U.S., even though many of them are escaping violence and generally abhorrent living conditions in Mexico and other Central American nations.
Aside from the silly and selfish notion that God would favor the arbitrary U.S. border over people looking for a better way of life coming here from violent third world living conditions, we find the suggestion that the formation of a mile long fissure was His way of discouraging immigration into the U.S to be quite amusing.
All the more so because the fissure isn’t even located near the border. It’s way the hell south of it, in fact, near the town of Hermosillo, in northern Mexico. In fact, one of the articles linked to above claims that the fissure is located in New Mexico. Apparently the author wasn’t able to discern the difference between “northern” and “new”.
Below is a map that may be helpful for these delusional people. As you can see, Hermosillo is around 200 miles south of the U.S. border with Mexico.
Oh, and the comments! You MUST read the comments to the conservative blogs linked to above. If you have a few minutes to kill, you’ll get all the entertainment you can stand for one day.
Here’s a teaser…
Yeah… he really said “continent”.
And here’s a nice large sampling of American-style Christianity. Aren’t we just so compassionate?
So there you have it. A smorgasbord of Christian narcissism combined with stunning ignorance. Even if the fissure was along part of the border, it is nearly 2,000 miles long. We’d need quite a few more fissures to keep the brown people out.
Frankly, it’s embarrassing living in the same country with these people.
Watch video of the fissure below, as reportedly filmed from a drone.
