Racism is alive and rampant among our police departments.
Text messages obtained by the Baton Rouge, Louisiana Police Department reveal the vitriolic hatred one fifteen year veteran of the force, Michael Elsbury, felt for the people of the district he was duty-bound to serve and protect. Elsbury wrote, “I wish someone would pull a Ferguson on them and take them out. I hate looking at those African monkeys at work…I enjoy arresting those thugs with their saggy pants.”
Elsbury stated in another text message, “They are nothing but a bunch of monkeys!!!! The only reason they have this job is because of the n***** in them.” The implication of this text message is frightening. Considering the context provided, it appears that Elsbury is referring to fellow officers, officers who are African-American. Elsbury’s venom appears to extend beyond the citizens of his district, grasping with skeletal fingers into the depths of the police department itself.
Elsbury’s racism is not the only case of hatred revealed within our police force. A Kansas City police officer posted racial slurs on his Facebook page following the slaughter of unarmed teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, and a St. Louis County cop’s racist, sexist rabid rants went viral while he was on duty in Ferguson.
This writer has to ponder, exactly what type of psychological screening is utilized in vetting potential police officers? Blatant hatred and bigotry cannot be sublimated to the point of invisibility. The argument that police must daily face the detritus of society in the line of duty begins to pale beside the repeated incidents of starkly racist police abuses of power. The facts are bleakly revealing. Our police force has been insidiously infiltrated by racially motivated bigots, determined to subvert proper procedure, indeed basic civility, in order to oppress non-white citizens. When their hate crimes remain hidden, they are overlooked by those who have the power to winnow out these extremists. It is all about race, my liberal friends, contrary to the vehement denials of our legislators.
When Barack Obama was elected President of the United States, seemingly overnight it became “okay” to hurl thinly-veiled poisoned barbs at the man holding the highest office in the land. Progressively, those barbs have become more sharply honed, and much less veiled. If the President of the United States may be defamed in such a manner, degraded and dehumanized, then of course our citizens are free targets. When small minded men achieve a modicum of power, tyranny will result. The type of authoritarian behavior which we are now privy to witness emanating from those whose oath decrees that they are “to serve and protect.”
Elsbury served the predominantly African-American community of the Fourth District, near Southern University. A criminal investigation has been launched. Michael Elsbury was placed on administrative leave on Wednesday, and by Thursday afternoon he had voluntarily resigned. The police chief, Carl Dabadie, expressed shock and remorse, stating, “It was gut-wrenching to believe that someone had that much hate in them, especially a police officer who is out there enforcing the law every day. It made me sick to my stomach.”
Frankly, Chief Dabadie, it will keep me awake at night.
