Director Francois Ozon, whose new film ‘By the Grace of God’ is based on real-life cases of sexual abuse inside the French Catholic Church, said that he hopes his latest work can open up debate, during press conference in Berlin on Friday.
“For me, this is a film that opens up the debate and I hope that the Church will seize the opportunity,” Ozon stated as the Berlinale film fest kicks off in the German capital.
Asked about whether the film might affect the course of the ongoing trial against a French Catholic priest accused of abusing more than 80 boys during the 1980s, Ozon said that “the French Justice Department is big enough not to be affected by a film.”
