  1. Min wage must not make a country uncompetitive. Eg Aus min wage is too high and makes it competitive as is. That’s why there is no real manufacturing. Everyone cannot have houses and double garages. Theoretically nice but not sustainable.

  2. Hey Gunes, sorry buddy, you have no idea of what you’re talking about. Australia’s economy is a global powerhouse. Are you KIDDING??? The AUD is one of the strongest currencies on the market. Their unemployment rate has only gone over 10% 3 times in the last 40 years, and that was due to normal cycles. Their GDP has been in the positive for AGES!

The fact is that their economy is 70% service sector jobs. That’s what keeps Australia’s economy pumping. Everyone has disposable income… hello??

Cost of living is high, yes, but wages more than make up for the higher cost of living. CPI is in line with most of the world. In fact, Australia’s CPI would need to be 50% higher than it is to match the US’ buying power per worker at US wages.

I just spent a month in Australia, trust me, they got a good thing going. Stop drinking the koolaid.

And furthermore, what you STILL don’t seem to get is that low-wage workers are being SUBSIDIZED by taxpayers! It is NOT the taxpayers’ responsibility to ensure that a low-wage worker can feed and house themselves if they are working for a multi-billion-dollar company. That’s the long and the short of it. It’s the COMPANIES’ responsibility to ensure that their workers can meet their living overhead, NOT taxpayers. And until you can debate that point, you have no point. So please stop with the ideology, and think.

  3. Sorry holes. Cannot disagree more. I live in Aus and have lived in many countries. Can compare this at least. Australia is a resource based economy, take out oil gas and iron and let me know what you’ve got left. There is no real competition. Everything is too expensive. 25 dollar cherries only in this country. Subsidizing, protectionism, no production. Holden is also closing down now. Writing ‘proudly 100% Australian’ on milk is not going to save your economy. Good hitech products for a reasonable price will. You cross the sea, and millions live for 5 dollars a day. But when they step on aussi land 40 times in a day. Australia is losing big opportunities by these crazy min wages. So I rest my case, giving all 3 bedroom houses with double garages and double cars to everyone is not the solution. The guy in your post asking for the min wage increase has a 3 bed house, double garage, a car, an suv and a boat in Australia. No need to increase it more.

It’s funny how you live in Australia, and don’t even get how your own economy works. Dude, do some research, I did. What do you think I’m pulling this all out of my ass?

As of the last accounting, 68% of Australia’s GDP was based on SERVICE SECTOR JOBS. Not mining, not industry, not gas… Don’t take my word for it, do some research.

“There is no real competition. Everything is too expensive. 25 dollar cherries only in this country.”

So don’t buy cherries for fuck’s sake. Dude, I was just there. I too have lived in many other countries. Trust me, when I tell you, more countries than you have. I’ve seen prices, CPI and cost of living on both ends of the spectrum.

I already acknowledged that prices were high. But from an economic standpoint, wages are more than commensurate with the high prices. There is plenty of competition in the retail sector, I bought a tablet at Harvey Norman for the same price I would have paid for it in the states. That would not have happened were there not price competition. I observed prices on MANY categories of products and services during my time there. In some categories, prices were significantly higher than average. In others, prices were in parity with other major markets. But that affected me as a tourist more than a local resident living and working on Australian wages!

And again, it doesn’t matter what you THINK, what matters are the numbers, and the statistics. You know, FACTS. For someone who “lives in Australia” to not understand that the economy he lives in blows most of the other developed world economies out of the water, only shows a special kind of ignorance of the facts, if not ideology. You’re not looking at the facts.

If what you were claiming were indeed true, your unemployment would be through the roof, your country’s debt rating would be in the toilet, as well as your currency. Instead, the OPPOSITE is true.

Get the facts dude… and stop making shit up…

Even with your country’s high wages, unemployment is STILL below the developed world average, and that’s with a recent increase in November…

“Subsidizing, protectionism, no production. Holden is also closing down now. Writing ‘proudly 100% Australian’ on milk is not going to save your economy.”

Well, all that doesn’t seem to making a chink in your economy. Sounds to me like you’ve taken a pretty silly conservative stance and that you have to resort to made up shit in order to justify your opinions. I did see a lot of that among the right-wing Australians. Pretty self-defeating if you ask me.

“Good hitech products for a reasonable price will. You cross the sea, and millions live for 5 dollars a day.”

And you think that’s a good thing? Are you fucking out of your mind?

“But when they step on aussi land 40 times in a day.”

Well, again, you don’t seem to have a clue about how your own economy works. It’s exactly this kind of defeatist ignorance, and arrogance that will cause your system to go down the tubes if that kind of thinking prevails.

“Australia is losing big opportunities by these crazy min wages. So I rest my case, giving all 3 bedroom houses with double garages and double cars to everyone is not the solution.”

Well, sorry, the numbers dispute you. In spades. You don’t seem to understand that allowing workers to have disposable income, allows them to spend money, that fuels the economy. It’s why Australia has evolved into an economic powerhouse that is almost 3/4 based on service sector jobs. It’s what made Australia’s economy resistant to the 2008 crash. It’s why the AUD is considered one of the world’s strongest currencies along with the NOK. So pardon me when I tell you, your opinion is based on silly rhetoric and nonsense. The facts dispute your arguments and you sticking to your guns on all this is due to one thing, and one thing only. Ideology. Just be a big boy and admit it.

“The guy in your post asking for the min wage increase has a 3 bed house, double garage, a car, an suv and a boat in Australia. No need to increase it more.”

Hello? Get a clue please! We’re not talking about Australia in the meme. We’re talking about the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. A country where 45% of full-time workers live below the POVERTY LINE. A country where Multi-billion dollar companies exploit workers at taxpayer expense. You’re here bellyaching about living and working in a country with one of the highest living standards in the developed world, without understanding it, nor appreciating it. Then, you come on this thread with nothing but ideological DRIVEL, that’s not even remotely based on facts and pass commentary on a system that you obviously have no clue about. Are you fucking kidding me??

Tell you what, go to the states, and try living THERE for minimum wage for a year. See how much you judge Australia after. Yeah, let’s see how you handle that.

Any other ideological bullshit you wish to discuss?
