French President Emmanuel Macron said that UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal was not up for negotiation, as he arrived at the European Council in Brussels on Thursday.
Macron told journalists: “I think it’s important to avoid any ambiguity: we can’t reopen a legal agreement, we can’t renegotiate what has been negotiated for months. We can have a political discussion but not a legal discussion.”
He added that it was up to May to find a political solution after she failed to get her deal passed through Westminster after pulling a vote earlier in the week, forcing her back to the negotiating table.
EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini also spoke to journalists about the situation between Russia and Ukraine following the Kerch Strait incident.
According to her, the Council “will confirm our strong position and our demand for Russia to release the vessel and the crew.”
Heads of state and government meet in Brussels on December 13 and 14 for a European Council summit.
The leaders are expected to discuss the EU’s long-term budget, the single market, migration, external relations and Brexit.
